Leanne from
Nore Valley Park came to our school and gave us seven eggs and an incubator.
The incubator had to stay at 37 degrees.
After a week we checked if there were
chicks in the eggs. We put a torch up to the an egg and saw that there was a chick
growing inside. There were chicks in 4 of the eggs. Fr. Quirke taught us that
an egg with no chick in it is called a ‘glugger’. Leanne took the four gluggers
and gave us three eggs with chicks in them. Now we had six fertile eggs. They took about 21 days to hatch. Five out of
the six eggs hatched. We had 2 yellow chicks, 2 brown chicks and one black
chick. The chicks had to stay in the incubator for 3 -4 hours after they
hatched to dry off. The chicks then got moved to the brood box where they grew
so much in the week.
Some of the chicks were very loud and were cheeping all
day. Each class got to name a chick. We called the two yellow chicks Furball
and Yellow Pecker, we called the two brown chicks Cleo and Bubbles and the
black chick is called Chick-a-tee.
Leanne came to collect the chicks on Friday
3rd June. We all gathered in the front yard to wave goodbye to the
chicks. We really enjoyed having the chicks in our school, watching them hatch
and grow.
