The Chicks

Leanne from Nore Valley Park came to our school and gave us seven eggs and an incubator. The incubator had to stay at 37 degrees.

After a week we checked if there were chicks in the eggs. We put a torch up to the an egg and saw that there was a chick growing inside. There were chicks in 4 of the eggs. Fr. Quirke taught us that an egg with no chick in it is called a ‘glugger’. Leanne took the four gluggers and gave us three eggs with chicks in them. Now we had six fertile eggs.  They took about 21 days to hatch. Five out of the six eggs hatched. We had 2 yellow chicks, 2 brown chicks and one black chick. The chicks had to stay in the incubator for 3 -4 hours after they hatched to dry off. The chicks then got moved to the brood box where they grew so much in the week.

Some of the chicks were very loud and were cheeping all day. Each class got to name a chick. We called the two yellow chicks Furball and Yellow Pecker, we called the two brown chicks Cleo and Bubbles and the black chick is called Chick-a-tee.

Leanne came to collect the chicks on Friday 3rd June. We all gathered in the front yard to wave goodbye to the chicks. We really enjoyed having the chicks in our school, watching them hatch and grow.

Ali O'Connell - Primary Game

Not everyone gets to represent their county on the hallowed Semple sod, but this Sunday, Sixth Class student Ali O'Connell will get to do just that. Ali will be part of a Tipperary Primary School camogie team who will take on their counterparts from Limerick at half time in the senior game. She had to attend numerous trials to be selected on this team and it is a great honour for herself, her family and her school.
Well done Ali and the very best of luck to you and all the Tipperary teams on Sunday. We have a feeling that this won't be your last time to play at Semple Stadium.

Green Schools Committee

Many thanks to our Green Schools Committee led by Mrs O'Dea for all their hard work this year (and for all the money they saved the school  through their promotion of energy and water conservation!)

Gaelic Football

Littleton NS hosted another memorable sporting occasion for students of Our Lady's this afternoon. Many thanks to the principal Mr Clancy for organising the games between our two schools. Both our boys' team and our girls' team were comfortable winners in the end and there were many notable performances. Well done to all who played and once again many thanks to the parents who brought the players to the games.

Green Schools Poster/Slogan Competition

Mrs O'Dea's Green Schools Committee ran a poster/slogan competition in the school this week. The theme of course was 'Water'. The standard was quite high and with great difficulty a winner was chosen from each class. Well done to all the winners.

Writers of the Month - May

Well done to the most recent crop of 'Writers of the Month'. Conspiracy fans will not be surprised by this month's winner of the staff award!

Class of the Month - May

The May 'Class of the Month' award went to the students of Third and Fourth Class. Their general good behaviour, politeness to visitors and a huge improvement in their lining up after break were major contributors to their success. Well done!

Sixth Class Trip to Slievenamon

Yesterday we went up Slievenamon. We parked the cars in Kilcash. We walked in total about 10 km. We went up normally and had lunch at the top. We were the first sixth class to see the school by using mirrors and the sun. On the way back down we went to the waterfall and into the water. After that we walked through the forest. Then after that we walked on a dirt track for about a kilometre. Them we were at the cars. We went into Grangemockler for ice cream. We were back at the school at about five to three.

Yesterday at half nine all of sixth class left for Slievenamon. We all split up into different cars. Ciara, Ali and I went with Miss Mason. Mr Gleeson and Miss Meehan came too. We parked  in Kilcash and walked up to the start of the mountain. It was a lovely day and we all had loads of sun cream on. When we got to the top we were wrecked. We took a picture and then ate our lunch, then sir rang Mrs Egan back home and they used a mirror to flash us so we could see them. We tried to flash them back but it didn't work, we could see them clearly though. We walked down to the waterfall after that. Everyone went for a paddle. A few of us fell, but dried off fast. The walk home was the nicest part and except for a few blisters we all had a great day.
